TV Review: The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season One

Does anyone else think that this part would have been perfect for Beth Riesgraf? I mean Ellie Kemper even kind of looks like her and Kimmy is basically the chipper naive parts of Parker from Leverage.

I’m not saying there is anything wrong with Ellie Kemper. She’s great in the part. She’s hilarious and adorable.

This show, like all the Netflix shows, is written to binge watch. So, each episode isn’t as eventful or as much of a contained story as a regular network show is. The episodes DO each have their own story but they bleed into the each other seamlessly so that it’s hard to tell when one episode ends and the next starts. From my experience all of the made for Netflix shows are like this and aren’t as entertaining if you only watch one episode.

This isn’t a bad thing, though. Since binge watching is how most people watch television shows these days some shows can actually be hurt by the fact that they get redundant and boring if you watch to many episodes in a row. Heavy dramas can actually give you information overload when you try to binge watch them. So, its smart for writers to structure shows for binge watching now.

Anyway, Kimmy Schmidt is a really funny show. It’s about a woman who was kidnapped by a cult leader when she was a teenager and then locked in a bunker for 15 years. So, she is essentially a 30 year old teenager with hints of (comedic) PTSD. She moved to NYC and made friends with an assortment of interesting characters. Its all over the top and very entertaining. I watched the whole season in one night and never got bored with it.

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt can be seen on Netflix exclusively. It only has one season so far but has already been confirmed to have a second season coming up next year.
