Book Review: War is Kind and Other Poems by Stephen Crane

I had never heard of Steven Crane. Which is not good. Although, he drifted into onscurity for a while he was apparently famous at the time of his death in 1900 and he wrote The Red Badge of Courage which is now considered an American Classic. I have heard of The Red Badge of Courage but never read it. I am actually fairly sure that I have read his poetry before.

Or maybe I think that because his writing reminds me of Allen Ginsberg. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Ginsberg was inspired by Crane.

This collection is high on imagery. It isn’t always my favorite poetry style but it is vivid and well crafted. It’s what you would expect from a realist poet from the late 1800s.

Well, that isn’t even true. It reads as more modern than most poetry I have read from that time period. It is definitely a collection worth reading.

You can buy War is Kind and Other Poems by Stephen Crane on June 15th at your favorite bookseller.

*I received this book free via Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review*
